3 photographers for a natural, documentary-style wedding in Byron Bay

Highlights. Byron Bay is made for photographs that look like the day felt: salt air, long light and people mid-laugh. If you would rather have candid, documentary-style photos than a long list of posed shots, here are three Byron Bay wedding photographers to start with. We list them in no particular order. Each photographer's own site has real wedding photo ideas to browse.

What we mean by "natural and documentary"

We mean photographers who watch and capture rather than stage, and who direct lightly when you need it. All three describe that approach on their own sites.

The three

Van Middleton, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast

Van Middleton

Van says they have photographed weddings for fourteen years and describes the work as honest, natural and cinematic, covering big landscapes and small moments. The focus is on genuine images rather than staged ones, and on making couples comfortable so the day feels relaxed.

Van is based on the southern Gold Coast and works across Byron Bay, the Tweed Valley, the Gold Coast and Brisbane, as well as destination weddings in places such as Fiji, Bali and Lord Howe Island. They say their work has been published in national and international magazines, and won a category at the 2023 International Wedding Photographer of the Year awards.

Van takes a limited number of weddings each year, so it is worth asking early if you have a date in mind.

A good fit if you want an experienced photographer who works across Byron and travels easily for a destination wedding.

"These are so much more than just photos, there's real magic in there."

Emma Wise Photography, Byron Bay

Emma Wise Photography

Emma is a local Byron Bay photographer with more than 15 years of experience across weddings and fashion, and describes herself as award-winning. She says she aims to create something that evokes a feeling, with each image telling its own story.

Her about page is warm and personal: she describes herself as a mother, sister, daughter and friend who has always loved helping people, and that care is the tone she brings to a wedding day.

She also shoots fashion, branding and product work, so you can see her wedding work and how she packages it before you get in touch.

A good fit if you want a long-time local photographer who also shoots fashion and brings that eye to your wedding photos.

"She is one of a kind. Her work is truly phenomenal."

Shane Shepherd, Byron Bay

Shane Shepherd

Shane says he has photographed more than 600 weddings since 2012, in Australia and overseas, and is based in Byron Bay with his wife Dee, who is also a wedding photographer. Before photography he was a touring guitarist for Australian indie bands, and he picked up a film camera to document life on the road.

His style is documentary at heart with an editorial eye. He says it matters that you feel like yourself on the day, so he directs in a relaxed way, with no forced smiles or awkward poses.

He has photographed weddings well beyond Byron, from the Fig Tree Restaurant at home to Hobart, Wanaka in New Zealand, Melbourne and Ireland, so he suits couples who are travelling for the day.

A good fit if you want an experienced photographer who captures the day as it happened and keeps direction to a minimum.

"There is no one else that could have captured our wedding the way Shane did. I was speechless when we received our photos from him, but even more impressed by his warmth, kindness, professionalism and absolute joyful nature as a human, he felt like a friend we'd known forever."

Before you book

Questions worth asking any wedding photographer:

  • Have you photographed at our venue, and can we see a full gallery from a wedding there?
  • How many hours are included, and what does an extra hour cost?
  • When will we receive our photos, and in what form?
  • Who is the photographer on the day, and is a second shooter included?
  • What is the payment schedule, and what happens if our date changes?

We chose these photographers from public information: each shoots weddings in Byron Bay and has positive reviews. Nobody pays to be included, and we have not tested anyone's services.
